BRITISH MASTERS HERO GOLF
BETTER BY WATER
PROJECT DETAILS
When: October 2018
Where: West India Docks
Following Team Europe’s success in the Ryder Cup, elite golf came to the heart of London’s Docklands thanks to Livett’s expertise on the water.
The European Tour tasked Livett’s with bringing the Hero Challenge – an action-packed, innovative one-hole shootout – to Canary Wharf in order to promote the upcoming British Masters. Some of the world’s leading players were involved in the night-time event which saw them chipping on to a floating green to score points.
It was a fantastic evening witnessed by huge crowds in person and on live television. Here’s how we made it happen…

HOW LIVETT'S MADE IT HAPPEN
The brief was to create a floating golf hole located in the South Dock of the West India Docks, consisting of a tee and green. The pontoons on which these were built also required floating walkways for access to the land.
Livett’s provided the complete marine coordination to enable the event to happen as successfully as it did. Working closely with the Canal & River Trust, who own the waterways in West India Docks as well as a selection of barges used for the project, we created a bespoke mooring plan using a variety of different methods. The lock in West India Docks was used as a safe, controlled area for the creative team to dress the tee and green pontoons suitably.
We utilised Scheldemond I to install temporary moorings in the dock, with her onboard HIAB crane and spud legs ideal for the task in hand, as can be seen in the image gallery below. We also collaborated with Northern Pontoon Limited, who provided the floating walkway solutions, which were then installed by us on site.
Given the nature of the event, there were other elements of the project which needed to be exactly right. It was vital the tee and green didn’t move on the water and that the distance between them were perfectly correct to ensure the competition was fair. Furthermore, all access had to be made completely safe whilst still looking attractive on screen.
Livett’s also provided all water safety during the event to allow all staff, guests and players – including some of golf’s biggest names such as world number one Justin Rose, Andrew “Beef” Johnston, Matt Wallace, Paul Dunne, Thorbjørn Olesen and Thomas Bjorn – could enjoy the event in a safe environment at all times.
We are delighted to say the Hero Challenge event in the shadow of Canary Wharf went off without a hitch. Thousands witnessed the competition on the night, with many more watching live on Sky Sports and online streams. And, much to the relief of the locals, no windows were smashed by any stray golf balls!
