What’s the difference between a life jacket and a life preserver?
The terms “life jacket” and “life preserver” are often used interchangeably, but they can have slightly different meanings depending on the context.
Essentially, a life jacket is a wearable personal flotation device (PFD) designed to keep a person afloat and position them in the water so their face is above the surface, even if unconscious.
A life preserver is a more general term that can refer to a broader range of buoyancy aid devices. This includes throwable life rings or other wearable PFDs. These may not meet the same rigorous standards as life jackets, depending on the type and use.
How much do life jackets weigh?
