How Livett's made it happen
In his bid to protect the planet, the third instalment of the popular Sonic film series sees the supersonic hedgehog head to London for the first time.
In mid-2023, the Livett’s marine filming team were enlisted to assist with the production of key scenes on the River Thames in three locations: Tower Bridge, Westminster and Canary Wharf. These were to be a mixture of plate shots and action scenes.
Tower Bridge
Our large specialist craft, Scheldemond I, proved to be the perfect camera boat for scenes filmed around Tower Bridge.
Owing to her size, she is particularly ideal for filming work that requires stability on the water, such as plate shots or stunts.
As detailed in our camera rigs on boats page, Scheldemond I is capable of housing the largest Technocranes on the market, and this shoot saw a 75ft Technocrane on deck to capture the required shots.
The ever dependable Eddie C featured on screen as the hero boat (keep an eye out for her when you watch the film!), whilst Bravo Lima GB was deployed as the safety boat for the shoot.
Canary Wharf
Here we provided a flat top barge for use as a lighting platform, with Scheldemond I also proving vital to the production once again.
Her spud legs were deployed to help fix the barge into position in the middle of the dock, allowing the crew to get the perfect lighting for the scenes.
We’re pleased as ever to say all filming went according to plan and without any issues.
With more instalments planned in the franchise, we’re keeping our fingers crossed we can welcome Sonic back to the River Thames soon!
