Filming for the critically acclaimed Hamnet, directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, saw production come to the River Thames for a discreet riverside shoot involving jetty and foreshore scenes, with the principal cast present.

With safety, privacy and efficient logistics all critical, Livett’s provided a secure operational base and dedicated on-water support to ensure the shoot ran smoothly in a live river environment.

Here’s how we helped make it happen…

How Livett's made it happen

The production required a discreet and well connected riverside base for their shoot, with scenes involving the main cast planned on the jetty and Thames foreshore.

From the outset, the priority was a location that could operate as a true site hub – keeping production departments close, controlling access, and enabling quick, quiet movement between land and water.

Livett’s provided access to our very own Durham Wharf, which served as the site base for all departments. The wharf provided a secure operational base with controlled access to the river, allowing cast, crew and equipment to be easily positioned and efficiently moved without interruption.

This setup reduced unnecessary transfers, minimised exposure to public areas, and supported the production team’s need for a calm, controlled working environment.

Alongside this base, we provided dedicated water safety support throughout filming. Romeo Lima was deployed as a safety boat to ensure the cast and crew were able to work safely by the water’s edge.

With activity taking place at the jetty and foreshore, our team remained on hand throughout the shoot to maintain a robust safety presence and support safe riverside access.

As with all riverside productions, extensive preparation took place ahead of filming. Drawing on Ed Livett’s extensive marine coordination experience, we secured the necessary permissions from the relevant river authorities, oversaw safety planning in advance meetings, and advised the production team on operational considerations when working in a live river environment. This pre-planning ensured everyone understood the practicalities of working on a tidal river and allowed filming to proceed with confidence.

We’re pleased to say that filming was carried out safely and efficiently, with Durham Wharf functioning as a discreet and flexible operational hub and Livett’s marine expertise supporting the successful delivery of the shoot.

Ed Livett, Managing Director of Livett’s, said: “Having access to our own riverside infrastructure gives productions a real advantage. For Hamnet, Durham Wharf was the perfect location for a one-stop solution for marine services. It provided a secure, controlled base away from public areas, allowing our team to deliver safe and efficient water operations, while giving the production the flexibility it needed on the day.”
