We’re very proud to announce Livett’s are actively supporting Sea-Change Sailing Trust with the launch of their new sailing barge.
Sea-Change are a fantastic organisation who make a real impact on the lives of disabled, disadvantaged and socially excluded young people by developing their personal skills with maritime courses.
Traditionally they have hired vessels to deliver their work, but they have been fundraising hard for a number of years to build a vessel of their own. That has now become a reality with the arrival of their dedicated new steel sailing barge, Blue Mermaid. It is a replica of one of the last barges ever built for the Thames, back in 1930, which was lost to a mine in the Thames Estuary during the war.
She does not have an engine and so those on board will develop real sailing skills in a low carbon environment. Livett’s contributed to the build with the purchase of the vessel’s rudder and will continue to support the hugely worthwhile project in the long-term.
Owning their own vessel will make Sea-Change more sustainable, whilst having cargo carrying capabilities. This will allow them to broaden training opportunities by offering traditional seamanship training to young people, give them more opportunities to develop their organisational and leadership skills and perhaps to consider a maritime career.
Following sea trials, Blue Mermaid will shortly be entering service with the charity.
Who are Sea-Change?
Formed in 2007, Sea-Change works off the Suffolk, Essex and North Kent coasts within the area bordering the lower Thames Estuary with young people, many from deprived communities, as well as those who are challenged by traditional educational settings, experiencing learning difficulties, social exclusion or at risk of offending.
They benefit over 200 people each season, including those not in employment, education or training. Outcomes include improving key skills, developing self-belief, developing the ability to work as team players, developing leadership skills and learning maritime skills.
The charity is a RYA Training and Sailability Centre, a member of the Association of Sail Training Organisations and an Approved Activity Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
