It’s a momentous year for one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks.
2019 marks the 125th anniversary of London’s iconic Tower Bridge, having been officially opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales – who were to become the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
Ever since its opening, the bridge has played a vital role in the life of London – from the practical benefits of the crossing and the ever-engrossing sight of its raising bascules, through to its stature as one of the world’s most loved and recognised locations.
To celebrate, Tower Bridge is hosting a wide array of events throughout the year, all of which can be seen on their dedicated anniversary page.
Livett’s are exceptionally proud of the close relationship we have forged with Tower Bridge over our many years on the Thames. Our operational base at Butler’s Wharf Pier is just a stone’s throw away and we have had the privilege to use Tower Bridge as the focal point in many of the diverse and exciting projects we have been involved in.
Here are just a few examples…
To many, Tower Bridge is seen as the “gateway” to London, so it was inevitable that it would play a vital role in welcoming the world for the 2012 London Olympics. Livett’s were honoured to assist with the transportation and placing of the Olympic rings on Tower Bridge for the Games.
Stormzy on the Thames
On a balmy evening in spring 2019, music superstar Stormzy performed on a floating stage in front of Tower Bridge, an eye-catching event that helped to usher in the launch of the UK’s first 5G mobile network.
Santander 123 Golf
As part of the Santander 123 launch, one of the world’s greatest golfers, Rory McIlory, was set the challenge of hitting a floating world map in front of Tower Bridge.
Ahead of the 2013 Ashes series, a number of Australian cricketers – including Michael Clarke and Mitchell Starc – took park in a warm-up session on a floating cricket pitch alongside Tower Bridge.
In 2016, we towed a record-breaking 100-metre digital screen through Tower Bridge as part of Virgin Media’s Be The Fastest promotional launch. The fantastic images taken by the helicopter photographer captured the impressive scale of the stunt.
Adidas Football Creator Dock
To mark the launch of the 2018/19 Champions League ball, we assisted Adidas in building a world-first floating football stadium on the River Thames, in the shadow of Tower Bridge.
The Red Bull Music Odyssey – six incredible boat parties with live music – set sail in June 2018, with some of the most spectacular shots coming as the musical armada sailed through the world’s most famous bridge.
In order to raise awareness for the new Lotto game, six giant inflatable balls were rigged onto barges and towed through central London. The stunning shots in front of Tower Bridge certainly produced the desired wow factor!
Of course, Tower Bridge has played its part in many film and TV productions over its illustrious history. One such recent example is Wonder Woman, for which our specialist craft Scheldemond I was used to film shots of Tower Bridge. These were then digitally altered to make the bridge look as it may have done closer to its opening in 1894!
Here’s to the next 125 years!
